You have noticed that your child does not talk as well as other children his or her age. Maybe she gets frustrated because people don't understand her. Maybe he refuses to talk because people do not understand what he says. Perhaps you find yourself translating what you child says. Maybe your child's teacher expressed concern that your child is not getting along with the other children. You're not sure that your child has a problem - what should you do?
Whatever your particular circumstances, it's
wise to intervene quickly. A speech-language evaluation can help you determine
the nature of your child's difficulties.
A speech evaluation is a test that checks how well a child says the sounds of English. A complete language evaluation consists of vocabulary tests, tests of receptive (understanding) and expressive (speaking) language. A sample of the child’s conversation is taped and analyzed.
Once testing is completed and the tests are scored, you and the speech therapist meet to discuss the test results and the therapist’s recommendations. A treatment plan is then formulated that meets the specific needs of your child.
What Is
Speech-Language Therapy?
Speech-language therapy is the treatment for children with speech and/or language disorders. A speech disorder refers to a problem with the actual production of sounds, whereas a language disorder refers to difficulty understanding or putting words together to communicate ideas. A child can have both a speech and language disorder.
